Family Name: Asteraceae (Compositae) - Aster or Sunflower Family

Identification Notes:

life cycle - perennial, reproducing by seed and rhizomes

stem - reproductive scapes, scales, leafless, white woolly growth habit

leaves - nearly heart-shaped, irregularly toothed, basal, white woolly below, emerge after flowering leaves

flowers - heads of yellow ray (ligulate) and disk (tubulate) florets; open on sunny days, appear before leaves, puffball when mature flower heads, mature flower heads
