Family Name: Asteraceae (Compositae) - Aster or Sunflower Family

Identification Notes:

life cycle - perennial, reproducing by seed

stems - reproductive (scapes), hollow, whitish, unbranched, leafless growth habit, seedling 1, seedling 2, seedling 3

leaves - oblanceolate, deeply toothed, backward pointing teeth or lobes, basal rosette, mid-vein hollow

flowers - heads of bright yellow ray (ligulate) florets, ray flower toothed tips; solitary; closing at night, form "puffball" when mature flower head, mature flower head 1, mature flower head 2, mature flower head 3

other - contains milky sap
