Common Name: perennial sowthistle, field sowthistle, creeping sowthistle
Scientific Name: Sonchus arvensis L.
Family Name: Asteraceae (Compositae) - Aster or Sunflower Family

Identification Notes:

life cycle - perennial, reproducing by seed and creeping roots

stems - upright, smooth, glandular hairs above, branched sparsely above growth habit 1, growth habit 2

leaves - alternate, lobed irregularly to sometimes almost entire, lobes point toward leaf base, margin weakly spined, small round basal lobes sessile or slightly clasping leaves 1, leaves 2, leaf bases

flowers - heads of yellow ray (ligulate) florets; terminal clusters; form "puffball" when mature flower heads, mature flower heads

other - contains milky sap
