Identification Notes:

life cycle – perennial, reproducing by seed and rhizomes

stems – upright, stout, hollow, single or multiple from base, sparsely branched, smooth, prominent swollen nodes growth habit 1 , growth habit 2, nodes

leaves – opposite, oval to lanceolate, short stalked or sessile, margin entire and often wavy, smooth, three prominent parallel veins leaves 1, leaves 2

flowers – 5-petaled, white to pink sometimes rose, petal tips notched, fragrant, sepals united to form tube; tight clusters terminal and axillary above flowers 1, flowers 2, flowers 3, flowers 4, flowers 5, flowers 6
