Identification Notes:

life cycle - perennial, reproducing by seed

stems - reproductive, upright, usually solitary, smooth, grooved, nodes swollen, ocrea (papery or membranous sheath) at nodes growth habit 1, growth habit 2, growth habit 3, growth habit 4, growth habit 5

leaves - basal leaves broad and ovate, large, smooth, base heart-shaped, usually red veined; stem leaves lanceolate, smaller above leaves 1, leaves 2, seedling leaves

flowers - green to reddish-brown when mature, small, petals absent; branched terminal clusters

seeds - shiny, triangular, 3 papery "wings" or heart-shaped appendages, wing margins toothed with 1-2 spines seeds
