Identification Notes:

life cycle - introduced perennial, reproducing by seed and short rhizomes

culms - stout, smooth, clump-forming growth habit 1

leaves - blades flat, smooth, hairless except for long silky hairs at base behind ligule, margins smooth to rough, transparent; rolled in bud; auricles absent; ligule membranous, tall, rounded or sharp; sheaths flattened or compressed, smooth, split and overlapping, transparent margins, red tinted with age leaves

seedhead – terminal stalks, 3 to 7 spike-like branches, branches alternately arranged and often drooping, spikelets in 4 rows on one-side of branch, spikelets egg-shaped and covered with silky black hairs seedhead 1, seedhead 2
