Identification Notes:

life cycle - annual, reproducing by seed

stems - upright, very tall, smooth, hollow, purplish coloration growth habit

leaves - opposite or whorled (3), oblong to narrowly ovate, sharply toothed, petiole base with stalked glands leaves 1, leaves 2, leaves 3

flowers - 5-petaled (2 lateral pairs fused, 5th petal notched), blue or purple to pink or sometimes white; solitary, elongated stalks, axillary flowers 1, flowers 2, flowers 3, flowers 4, flowers 5, flowers 6, flowers and seedpods

seedpods - capsules, dehiscent when mature seedpods
