Scientific Name: Helianthus tuberosus L.
Family Name: Asteraceae (Compositae) - Aster or Sunflower Family

Identification Notes:

life cycle - perennial, reproducing by seed, rhizomes and tubers at rhizome tips

stems - upright, very tall, branched above, hairy, rough, grooved growth habit

leaves - lower leaves opposite lower, upper leaves alternate, oval to lanceolate, upper surface rough, lower surface hairy, toothed margins, tip narrowly pointed; petioles winged leaves

flowers - heads of 12 to 20, large, yellow ray (ligulate) surrounding darker, yellow disc (tubulate) florets, bracts green and spreading; clusters terminal flowers 1, flowers 2
