Common Name: spotted joe-pye weed
Scientific Name: Eupatorium maculatum L., Eupatoriadelphus maculatus
Family Name: Asteraceae (Compositae) - Aster or Sunflower Family

Identification Notes:

life cycle – perennial, reproducing by seed

stems – upright, stout, tall, unbranched, solid purple or purple spotted, not hollow, whitish hairs growth habit

leaves – whorled 4-5(6) per node, lanceolate to narrowly ovate, petioled, margins sharp toothed leaves 1, leaves 2, leaves 3

flowers - heads of purple or lavender disk (tubulate) florets, 8-24 florets per head; terminal cluster, flat topped flower
