Family Name: Asteraceae (Compositae) - Aster or Sunflower Family

Identification Notes:

life cycle - perennial, reproducing by seed

stems - upright, smooth, branching, slightly zigzag growth habit

leaves - alternate, lanceolate, slightly dissected or lobed; lower leaves form rosette; upper leaves on reproduction stem, smaller, clasping leaves 1, leaves 2

flowers - heads of bright blue ray (ligulate) florets, florets square-tipped with several notches; axillary clusters up to 3; most apparent morning, closed late day flower flowers

other - contain milky sap
