Scientific Name: Centaurea maculosa Lam.
Family Name: Asteraceae (Compositae) - Aster or Sunflower Family

Identification Notes:

life cycle - biennial, reproducing by seed

stems - upright to reclining, relatively slender but tough, hairy or downy, branched throughout growth habit 1, growth habit 2, growth habit 3

leaves - basal rosette first year, second year alternate; pinnately divided below, segments narrow, smaller above and less divided, surface short haired, margins tough hairs leaves

flowers - heads of pink to purple (sometimes white) disk (tubulate) florets, bracts fringed with bristly hairs; solitary, terminal loose panicle, axillary above flowers 1, flowers 2
