Common Name: white wood aster
Scientific Name: Aster divaricatus (Nutt.) Torrey & A. Gray
Family Name: Asteraceae (Compositae) - Aster or Sunflower Family

Identification Notes:

life cycle - perennial, reproducing by seed and rhizomes

stems - upright, smooth, often zig-zag growth habit

leaves - lower ovate, sharply serrated, heart-shaped base on long petioles; upper small, lanceolate, nearly entire on shorter petioles leaves

flowers - heads of 6 to 12 white ray (ligulate) florets surrounding yellow (often turn reddish purple) disk (tubulate) florets; flat-topped clusters flower heads
